Austin Nevada

AUSTIN is filled with a history of thousands of people for over 100 years.

It provides a visitor with plenty to see and learn how it used to be in its hey day! The buildings that grandmother knew are still standing and the locals will be happy to tell you some of their secrets and stories that have been passed on.

Walking through the cemetery will show history unique to this area, built on the backs of those who made this county and state.

Of course there are Restaurants to satisfy an appetite; long standing Pubs to wet your whistle.

The locals and Ghost Hunters who show up on Gridley Days (every June) say there is more than one kind of spirit in these buildings.

Gift shops filled with items that you just have to have including jewelry made by locals using turquoise found in the hills and selections of minerals from all over the state, country and world.

The Austin Museum, Gridley Store, Library, Court House, Chamber of Commerce and more will share with you the Lively History of the people that have lived here and passed through.

A new school was built recently to take over from the original that most of the locals graduated from. The building on Main st. with a large bell is now used as a Youth Center. The Silver State complex is making the addition of a Visitor Center in the near future. Our local Hardware store; Lander lumber - an indispensable fixture of life!

The Community provides a Senior Center, Volunteer Fire Department, Police Sub Station, with two deputies and highway patrol man. There is a part time Medical Clinic and Volunteer Ambulance team. A large Community centre - Town Hall holds everything from town socials to political meetings. A variety of clubs and agencies including commissioners have meetings regularly. Real Estate services and opportunities come in all sizes from residential homes, prepared valley lots to ranches that stretch as far as the eyes can see for those who appreciate country living.

Inspiring churches of all faiths, Baptist, Mormon - Latter Day Saints, and Episcopal have held strong for many years against the weather and politics. The retired Catholic church, St. Augustine is being restored with plans for the arts that will offer a unique environment for meetings and get-togethers.

On the way East out of town, stop at Gandolfo Park with it's wonderful rest area especially on those hot summer days. A play area for children of all ages, outdoor swimming pool, horseshoe pits, tennis courts, BBQ pit and more! Take some time out and relax! Plan to hold your celebrations and reunions here!

The Airport located in the Reese River Valley can accommodate large and small aircraft. Come be a part of the annual fly in held every August. And of course there is "Santa's Fly In" you just can't miss!

Great photographic opportunities are everywhere you turn. Some of historic buildings show their age, where others have stood the test of time. Homes in the hills, built to last, show that thick walls and a wood stove can survive all seasons! Whether walking in town or in the hills, you will see the Indian paint brush, wild yellow roses brought by grand parents of locals. The bucks, deer and fawn, elk, deer and fawn, along with local and migrating birds.

You may come across the remains of a once profitable mines and see whats left of the buildings in which they lived while standing in awe at the the expansive views of the valleys. One person summed up, "it is so pretty it will hurt your eyes". It is true!

Great riding trails for horses, off road vehicles, bicycles and trucks are there for those willing to get off the beaten path, or to visit the nearby parks like Birch Creek and Austin Summit where so many once lived and mined. Austin Roping Grounds and Arena is there for resting yourself and horses. A Shooting Range is available to test and practise your skills.
